I am a Bulgarian and maybe I am not impartial about the beauty of this city. I always loved to wander on its streets and take photos of its dilapidated at some places but beautiful architecture.

The turquoise waters off the coast of the Cayman Islands are so clear you can see the sand on the sea bed below. But that’s not all you might see beneath you. As our boat pulled up onto a shallow sandbank, dark shapes started appearing below us in the water, gliding along the sea bed and circling around us. Our boat trip had promised we would be able to see stingrays out here and they weren’t wrong – you could see over 30 of them before we’d even stopped the boat.

Swimming with stingrays is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Cayman Islands and ‘Stingray City’ is the place to do it. I’m not exactly a natural underwater, but couldn’t miss this opportunity to get up close to these graceful creatures. Another boat arrives at Stingray City

Stingray City is an area of shallow sandbars about half an hour’s boat ride off the coast of Grand Cayman – just enough time for a rum punch to steady my nerves. The story goes that fishermen started stopping off in the calm waters here to clean their catch on their way back home, throwing their leftover bits of fish overboard. The stingrays soon realised this was the place to come for an easy feast and started turning up whenever they heard the noise of a boat engine. And after the fishermen came the tourist boats who now bring boatloads of divers and snorkelers out here to swim with and feed the stingrays.

Now everyone knows what happened to Steve Irwin, killed when a stingray barb pierced his chest, but how dangerous are stingrays? Well not very apparently. The accident was a one-in-a-million chance and generally they are gentle and placid. Which is just what you want to hear before you get surrounded by them. We were given snorkelling gear and swam out into the chest-high clear waters, and I was immediately face-to-face with my first stingray.

When you’re underwater you can see how graceful they are, with their wing-like fins pulsing and propelling them through the water. I was also surprised by how big they were, some can be a couple of metres wide. As one swam by I reached out my hand to touch it. The grey skin on top was rough like sandpaper, but the white underbelly was as smooth as velvet.

The stingrays here are definitely not shy. They’re so used to being around people and fed by them that they’ll happily rub up against you, float around you and even over you – sliding up your back as you bend over snorkelling so it looks like you’re wearing a stingray cape. They’re sniffing you out so see if they can find any trace of their favourite food – squid. Our guide handed out pieces of squid to feed them with and I was suddenly surrounded.

Their mouths are underneath in the middle of their underbelly and if you hold out the squid they’ll glide over you and suck it right out of your hand. It feels a bit like a vacuum cleaner on your skin, though watch out where they’re sucking as you can end up with a stingray love bite! And the love goes both ways – the grace and beauty of these stingrays is something you will never forget.

THE DETAILS

There are lots of boat companies in Grand Cayman offering trips to Stingray City. Prices start around $45 for a three-hour trip, and vary depending on the size of boat. You’re best to avoid times when there are a lot of cruise ships in port though as Stingray City can get totally overwhelmed by tour groups.

I cannot convey in words just how wonderful a vacation spot Barcelona is. But like any cultural hub one is yet unfamiliar with, it has its own way of life which you and I may be unaware of. And that’s okay as long as you have some idea of what is acceptable conduct and what isn’t. On my visit, I learnt a lot about the Spanish way of doing things and now, I can proudly claim that even though I’ll never seem like one of their own to the locals, I’m not going to be the ignorant, first-time tourist here.

DO’S

GET ACCOMMODATION IN DOWNTOWN BARCELONA:

One thing I strongly recommend to one and all is to get a hotel as close to downtown Barcelona as possible. The deals at the far off hotels may be attractive, but you’ll have a much better experience if you’re closer to all the hustle bustle and activity. Sightseeing in Barcelona means a lot of walking, so book a centrally located hotel, make sure to throw in your walking shoes when walking and also consider doing a bike tour of the city when you don’t want to walk and the weather is good!

This is the very reason we chose to stay at Hotel Continental at the La Rambla for our holiday. It was easier for us to explore all the nooks and crannies without fuss on foot.

LEARN A FEW SPANISH WORDS:

The first thing you must do before flying out to Spain is learning some simple, common Spanish words. Sí, Por favour, Gracias, Disculpe, No entiendo – yes, please, thanks, excuse me, I don’t understand – are all words you should keep in mind.

Trust me, they do come in handy when you have to ask a local for directions or conduct yourself gracefully in general.

DO VISIT THE WINE BARS:

Another important must-do Spanish typicality is visiting their wine bars and sampling delicious tapas as snacks.

DO BUY SOUVENIRS:

If you’re going to buying souvenirs, go to the Museum shops. You’ll get a standardised price and authentic merchandise.

DON’TS

Now that was all you should do, but I guess the list of don’ts is going to be longer.

DON’T GO FOR DINNER BEFORE 8:

First of all, try not to disrespect the local timings and schedules. Don’t walk into eateries expecting dinner service at 6pm. The Spanish eat at 8pm or later and while in Spain, do as the Spanish do! Eat like locals in Spain to get the feel of it.

DON’T HAVE PAELLA FOR DINNER (IT CAN GIVE YOU SLEEPLESS NIGHTS):

Another blunder to avoid is eating the local classic preparation – paella – for dinner. It is a lunch dish and too rich to be had at night, unless one has super metabolism or enjoys the midnight stomach rumble!

DON’T TIP HEAVILY:

Also, when at a restaurant, don’t tip too generously. The norm is to leave a bit of loose change behind for the locals who do not believe in lavish tipping.

DON’T PHOTOGRAPH AT SHOPS WITHOUT PERMISSION:

One of the most common mistakes that first-timers make is actually quite an understandable error. When we visit a new place, clicking pictures is almost a reflex action. But photography in market places and shops is looked down upon, unless you seek the owners’ permission. Thankfully though, most local store owners don’t object but make sure to ask beforehand.

DON’T BE CARELESS WHILE SHOPPING:

Also, I can’t stress enough how you mustn’t be careless with your belongings. You just can’t afford to be careless in the crowded areas of Barcelona, especially Las Ramblas. Keep your purses, wallets, cameras and phones in close touch because pickpockets and con artists roam here freely. Now that’s not the kind of local talent you want to enjoy.

DON’T HAVE A RIGID ITINERARY:

Barcelona is a place where fascinating spectacles arise in an unplanned fashion. You should leave room for impromptu merriment. I assure you, you’ll find plenty of it in this brilliant Spanish township.

DON’T WEAR UNCOMFORTABLE CLOTHES OR FOOTWEAR:

Barcelona travel is more about hopping from one place to another and involves a lot of moving around. I fell while rushing down the slope of Park Guell, just because I was wearing flats. That is why I’d recommend it to one and all to be smart enough and choose some cool walking shoes for hopping around. Stick to shorts and cool t-shirts! Believe me; I carried none of it, to be disappointed later on. I had to buy a few t-shirts from Barcelona to wear to the soccer game.
