How to build a cohesive team in business and sport

The team spirit and cohesion of sports teams are inspiring. In terms of teams, business and sport have a lot in common. Both depend on the members of the said team to perform their best and achieve the wanted results. In both, the number and purpose of the members vary according to the rules and goals. And in the end, both sports and business require dedication and cohesive teams.

But how are such teams built? Sadly, great teams aren’t created overnight. They need a firm and loyal leader who will implement these 6 things that will lead to a more cohesive team, whether you’re in business or sports.

1. Set shared goals

Teams, in various fields of business and sports, are usually created out of individuals with different backgrounds and experiences. To integrate them into a functioning unit, you need to create a shared goal you will be working towards. The team members need to understand what the goal is, how to achieve it and why should they achieve it.

If you don’t have those three main rules of goal setting set up, you need to work on them as a team. By setting shared goals you’re putting all the differences aside and focusing on at least one thing all team members have in common: achievement!

2. Assign each member a role

In every group sport, each member has a certain role they have to play. Just like in volleyball we have a setter, in business we can have a planner, team worker, monitor evaluator, coordinator, and similar. For a balanced and cohesive team, each member needs to take at least one of these roles. What are the ways of assigning such roles?

Besides the tests you can purchase online, the easier way is to detect the strengths and weaknesses of each team member. That way you will be able to determine who is the most capable person on your team for each task. Review those roles regularly and keep your team members satisfied with the roles they take.

3. Offer training and development

Even though for great success we need to focus on our strengths, we mustn’t neglect our weaknesses either. A perfect team and a perfect person don’t exist. However, those who are willing to continuously work on their skills and improve their abilities are on the right track to becoming a dream team! What can you do to support them?

In addition to reviewing strengths and weaknesses, you can help your team members create a unique development plan that will help them manage their future in the team. Offer training of skills and development of new abilities to enhance your team’s expertise and create a more positive environment.

4. Think like a team

To act like a team, you must think like one! However, with our differences, it can be difficult to streamline similar ideas and thoughts, which is completely natural. To have more team spirit and be closer to your mates in the team, you should implement regular team building activities, whether you’re a company or a sports team. What kind of activities would be the best for cohesion?

To increase cohesion and improve the motivation of your teammates, consider competitive games, such as team sports. Find an opponent and coach your team to victory. To bring the members closer together, provide them with custom sportswear that will unite their work and create a great atmosphere. Playing in the same-colored gear has a positive impact on relationships and creates a sense of belonging.

5. Introduce clear communication

No matter what your goals are or how big your team is, you need to practice clear, two-way communication. Use simple and clear language when communicating with your team so everyone understands the message you’re trying to convey. What happens if the teams aren’t physically close together?

Today, remote teams aren’t a rare occurrence anymore. Staying informed and connected while working remotely can be a true challenge. So, learn how to keep in touch with a remote team for improved communication and cohesion that knows no boundaries. Don’t let the distance guide you away from the cohesiveness you can create.

6. Celebrate success together

One of the most prominent aspects of sports teams is the way they celebrate after they score. Whether we’re talking about football, soccer, basketball, or any other team sport, you can notice how teammates celebrate together. That is what most companies are missing in their teams!

Forget about envy and jealousy, try to appreciate each team member for their hard work and the results they have achieved. Celebrate each milestone no matter how big or little it is. In an environment where parties and celebrations are common, people are more motivated to do their best and work together.

Final thoughts

It can take months, if not years, to build a truly cohesive team. Ensure each member is valued equally and show appreciation to them all. Whether someone is a top performer or support, each plays their own role that makes the team cohesive!
